Life#
Yusuf Ziya Efendi was born in Bitlis in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Pasinler (Hasankale) in 1889/90, at about 15, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1895/96 to 1902/03 places Yusuf Ziya in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Bitlis, the birthplace.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to 400 in 1902/03, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Bitlis, when one in three paid officials earned less.
