Life#
Ahmet Şükrü Efendi was born in Van in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Şükrü also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Ahmet Şükrü began work in Van in 1886/87, at about 15, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1890/91, with Ahmet Şükrü as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Doğubayazıt (Bayezid). Ahmet Şükrü then moved to Bitlis, Erzincan and Muş from 1891 to 1894, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru) in 1892/93, then back to Bitlis from 1894 to 1899. The annual lists then follow Ahmet Şükrü to Şırnak from 1899 to 1905, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür). The last post was in Van, the birthplace, in 1905/06.
