Life#
Born in Van in 1871/72 (AH 1288), Yusuf Ziya Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a senior army captain (kolağası). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 20, in 1891/92, Yusuf Ziya began work in Başkale, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1894/95, places Yusuf Ziya in Başkale as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came a return to Van, the birthplace, from 1895 to 1897. For 1897 to 1902 the lists have no entry. The last post was in Suriye in 1902/03, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür).
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to 1,000 in 1902/03, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Suriye, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1902/03.
