Life#
Born in Van in 1872/73 (AH 1289), Süleyman Necati Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Süleyman Necati also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Süleyman Necati began work in Van in 1892/93, at about 20, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 160 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places Süleyman Necati in Van, the birthplace, as an official (Memur), where the entries run to 1899/1900, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1897/98. Next came Erciş in 1900/01, as an acting director (Müdür Vekili). The last posts were in Van again from 1901 to 1905.
Pay rose from 160 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to a peak of 480 in 1900/01, as Müdür Vekili in Erciş, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 380 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
