Life#
Born in Osmancik in 1872/73 (AH 1289), Hafız Ali Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a farmer (çiftçi). Ali had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Sille in 1892/93, at about 20, paid from the start, on 190 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places Ali in Şile as an official for written correspondence (Muharrerat Memuru). The annual lists then follow Ali to Darulhamza, Mada'in Salih (Medain-i Salih), Aleppo (Halep) and Hadımköy, four places in 11 years. For 1895 to 1900 the lists have no entry. The last post was in Çatalca in 1904/05. The lists give Askere Alindi for 1894/95 instead of a title.
The salary went from 190 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 1,000 in 1900/01, the peak, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Darulhamza, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
