Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289), Fransuva Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Fransuva had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi), and wrote Armenian as well as Turkish.
At about 16, in 1888/89, Fransuva began work in Galata, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places Fransuva in Skopje (Üsküp) as a postal official (Posta Memuru), where the entries run to 1894/95. Next came Komotini (Gümülcine) from 1896 to 1900. The last posts were in Chios (Sakız) from 1900 to 1906, first as Posta Memuru, from 1904/05 as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti).
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to a peak of 495 in 1900/01, as Posta Memuru in Chios, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
