Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community, Artin Ernaki Köleyan Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Artin Ernaki Köleyan also wrote French as well as Turkish and spoke Greek (Rum).
At about 22, in 1894/95, Artin Ernaki Köleyan began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1896/97, places Artin Ernaki Köleyan in Galata as an official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru), where the entries run to 1900/01, with a rise to official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru) in 1899/1900. The last posts were in Sirkeci from 1901 to 1904.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to 340 in 1903/04, the peak, as Mersule Memuru in Sirkeci, when 31 per cent of paid officials earned less.
