Life#
Born in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1871/72 (AH 1288), Ali Rıza Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Ali Rıza had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), wrote Arabic, Persian and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1893/94, at about 22, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 350 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1896/97, places Ali Rıza in Galata in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), where the entries run to 1900/01. The last posts were in Tarabya in 1901/02 and Beyoğlu in 1902/03.
The salary went from 350 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to 450 in 1902/03, the peak, in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Beyoğlu, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, seven years of salary come to 31,200 kuruş, 74 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
