Life#
Hasan Kemal Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Hasan Kemal began work in Istanbul in 1892/93, at about 20, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1896/97, with Hasan Kemal as a letters official (Mekâtib Memuru) in Galata, where the entries run to 1900/01. The last posts were in Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1901 to 1906.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to 250 in 1905/06, the peak, as an official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru) in Istanbul, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less.
