Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmet Rauf Bey was the child of a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Ahmet Rauf had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1887/88, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 75 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1888/89 to 1905/06 places Ahmet Rauf in the same office, accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
