Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289), Mehmet Kazım Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army major (binbaşı). Mehmet Kazım had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1888/89, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1888/89, places Mehmet Kazım in Istanbul, the birthplace, as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), where the entries run to 1890/91. Next came Bakırköy from 1891 to 1904, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru). From 1905 to 1907 the annual entries place Mehmet Kazım in Heybeliada, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1906/07.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to a peak of 550 in 1906/07, as 3. Müdür in Heybeliada, when 64 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 18 years the salaries add up to 55,800 kuruş, 52 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
