Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1866/67 (AH 1283), Ali Şevket Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Ali Şevket had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 21, in 1887/88, Ali Şevket began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1888/89, to 1905/06, every annual entry places Ali Şevket in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Mabeyni humayun.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to 1,450 in 1903/04, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Mabeyni humayun, when 93 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over the years with a salary, pay stood on average in the top 15 per cent of each year's paid officials, a standing reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. After the last annual entry, for 1905/06, the list of 1906/07 (AH 1324) gives the status word Vefat (death).
