Life#
Born in Izmir (İzmir) in 1866/67 (AH 1283), Menas Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Menas had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi). In all Menas knew four languages, Armenian, French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish, all in writing; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
At about 20, in 1886/87, Menas began work in Izmir, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. From 1888/89 to 1894/95 every annual entry places Menas in Izmir, the birthplace, first as an official of the union post (İttihat Posta Memuru), from 1891/92 in the collections office (Tahsilat Kalemi).
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to a peak of 500 in 1889/90, as İttihat Posta Memuru in Izmir, when 42 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1894/95.
