Life#
Born in Silivri in 1866/67 (AH 1283), Ligoraki Efendi came from the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Ligoraki also wrote Greek (Rum) as well as Turkish.
Work began in Izmir (İzmir) in 1891/92, at about 25, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 120 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1894/95, places Ligoraki in Izmir as a postal official (Posta Memuru). From 1895 to 1902 the annual entries place Ligoraki in Mytilene (Midilli).
Pay rose from 120 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 350 in 1895/96, as Posta Memuru in Mytilene, when one in four paid officials earned less. In all, eight years of salary come to 30,840 kuruş, 64 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1901/02.
