Life#
Artin Ayvazyan Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1866/67 (AH 1283) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Artin Ayvazyan also wrote French as well as Turkish.
At about 19, in 1885/86, Artin Ayvazyan began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 250 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1885/86 to 1898/99 places Artin Ayvazyan in Galata, first as a postal official (Posta Memuru), from 1892/93 as an official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru) and from 1898/99 as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur).
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to 550 in 1895/96, the peak, as Mevrude Memuru in Galata, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 480 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1898/99. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl defterlerine göre İstanbul doğumlu Ermeni devlet adamları" by HARUN TUNCA (2016) probably refers to Artin Ayvazyan, since the name and the birthplace agree.
