Life#
Ahmet Rıfat Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1866/67 (AH 1283), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 19, in 1885/86, Ahmet Rıfat began work in Istanbul, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1885/86, places Ahmet Rıfat in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Mytilene in 1887/88, then Balıkesir from 1888 to 1893. Ahmet Rıfat then moved to Bandırma in 1893/94. The last posts were in Gönen from 1894 to 1897, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to a peak of 600 in 1894/95, as 3. Müdür in Gönen, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1896/97.
