Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1865/66 (AH 1282), Mehmet Sadettin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1883/84, at about 18, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1885/86, with Mehmet Sadettin as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1890/91, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru) in 1890/91. Mehmet Sadettin then moved to Babiali and Istanbul from 1891 to 1895. From 1895 to 1907 the annual entries place Mehmet Sadettin again in Babiali, first as Muhabere Memuru, from 1905/06 as an assistant director (Müdür Muavini).
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to a peak of 1,260 in 1900/01, as Muhabere Memuru in Babiali, when 93 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 22 years the salaries add up to 207,960 kuruş, 1.6 times what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
