Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1874/75 (AH 1291), Nuri Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (ketebe). Nuri had 12 years of schooling, at the Imperial School (Mekteb-i Sultani).
At about 19, in 1893/94, Nuri began work in Istanbul, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1898/99, with Nuri as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Istanbul, the birthplace. Nuri then moved to Babiali in 1900/01, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), and Istanbul in 1901/02. The last posts were in Beyoğlu from 1902 to 1906, with a rise to Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1898/99 to 450 in 1905/06, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Beyoğlu, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, eight years of salary come to 27,420 kuruş, 58 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
