Life#
Born in Diyarbakır in 1854/55 (AH 1271), Dikran Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Dikran also wrote Armenian, French and Turkish.
At about 17, in 1872/73, Dikran began work in Diyarbakır, paid from the start, on 500 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1884/85, places Dikran in Diyarbakır, the birthplace, as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), where the entries run to 1894/95. For 1895 to 1897 the lists have no entry. The last posts were in Beyoğlu from 1897 to 1906. A career like this is rare; fewer than 10 per cent of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more kept one title throughout.
The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1884/85 to 1,200 in 1904/05, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Beyoğlu, when 91 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 20 years of salary come to 144,900 kuruş, 1.2 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
