Life#
Born in Diyarbakır in 1855/56 (AH 1272) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community, Kesidrak(?) Zoryan Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Kesidrak(?) Zoryan also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Diyarbakır in 1884/85, at about 29, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. Fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 29 or older. From the first annual entry, for 1889/90, to 1894/95, every annual entry places Kesidrak(?) Zoryan in the same post, official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), in Diyarbakır, the birthplace.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 380 kuruş a month in 1889/90, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Diyarbakır, when 21 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1894/95.
