Life#
Born in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1855/56 (AH 1272), Corci Efendi came from the Catholic Christian (Katolik) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Corci had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi), and wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Beirut in 1870/71, at about 15, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 450 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1874/75, with Corci as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Gaza (Gazze). Corci then moved back to Beirut, the birthplace, from 1876 to 1880, then four places in seven years. Next came a return to Beirut from 1887 to 1895, then Thessaloniki in 1895/96. The last posts were in Istanbul from 1896 to 1904, first as an assistant director (Müdür Muavini), from 1898/99 as a chief clerkship (Başkitabet) and from 1899/1900 as PT Nezareti Meclisi Azasi.
Pay rose from 450 kuruş a month in 1874/75 to a peak of 4,000 in 1901/02, as PT Nezareti Meclisi Azasi in Istanbul, when 99 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 31 years the salaries add up to 496,920 kuruş, 2.6 times what an official on the median salary earned, a level reached by fewer than 6 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
