Life#
İbrahim Hilmi Efendi was born in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1858/59 (AH 1275) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); İbrahim Hilmi also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
İbrahim Hilmi began work in Baalbek in 1876/77, at about 17, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1880/81, places İbrahim Hilmi in Basrul harir as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1893/94. For 1894 to 1906 the lists have no entry. The last post was in Havran in 1906/07. A career like this is rare; fewer than 10 per cent of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more kept one title throughout.
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to 500 in 1906/07, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Havran, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
