Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1858/59 (AH 1275), Kadri Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Kadri had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and attended the telegraph school as well.
At about 18, in 1877/78, Kadri began work in Istanbul, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1880/81, to 1890/91, every annual entry places Kadri in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to 300 in 1888/89, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when 12 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 11 years of salary come to 30,000 kuruş, 45 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. After the last annual entry, for 1890/91, the list of 1891/92 (AH 1309) gives the status word Vefat (death).
