Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1858/59 (AH 1275), Ahmet Faik Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Ahmet Faik had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and attended the telegraph school as well.
At about 15, in 1873/74, Ahmet Faik began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1875/76, places Ahmet Faik in Pirot (Şehirköy) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Ahmet Faik to six places in 13 years, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1878, then Trgovište (Tırgovişte) from 1889 to 1898. The last posts were in Demirköy (Samakovcuk) from 1899 to 1904. Nine places on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to a peak of 750 in 1878, as Seyyar Memur in Hadımköy, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 600 kuruş. Over 26 years the salaries add up to 145,200 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. After the last annual entry, for 1903/04, the list of 1904/05 (AH 1322) gives the status word Vefat (death).
