Life#
Born in Nigbolu in 1858/59 (AH 1275), Ahmet Hamdi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Ahmet Hamdi had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 22, in 1880/81, Ahmet Hamdi began work in Thessaloniki (Selanik), with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1885/86, with Ahmet Hamdi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Elbasan (İlbasan). Next came Bitola (Manastır), Korçë (Görice), Acre (Akka), Jeddah (Cidde) and Manavgat, five places in 14 years. The last posts were in Bolvadin from 1901 to 1903, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür). Jeddah, about 2,800 km from Nigbolu, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to a peak of 720 in 1898/99, as Muhabere Memuru in Jeddah, when four in five paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 380 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
