Life#
Ali Rıza Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1864/65 (AH 1281), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Telgraf cavusu". Schooling took seven years, at the Askeri Rusdiye; Ali Rıza also attended the telegraph school.
Ali Rıza began work in Istanbul in 1877/78, at about 13, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 120 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 6 per cent started at 13 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1880/81, places Ali Rıza in Kadıköy as an official (Memur). Ali Rıza then moved to Thessaloniki (Selanik) and Bitola (Manastır) from 1882 to 1888, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1882/83, then Üsküdar from 1888 to 1897. The last posts were in Selimiye from 1897 to 1903.
Pay rose from 120 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to a peak of 575 in 1902/03, as Muhabere Memuru in Selimiye, when two in three paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
