Life

Mehmet Nezir Bey was born in Istanbul in 1860/61 (AH 1277) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

At about 19, in 1879/80, Mehmet Nezir began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1879/80, with Mehmet Nezir as a policeman (Polis) in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1881/82. Mehmet Nezir then moved to Beyoğlu from 1882 to 1884. From 1888 to 1902 the annual entries place Mehmet Nezir in Üsküdar, first as a sergeant (Çavuş), from 1889/90 as a police commissioner, third class (3. Sınıf Polis Komiseri) and from 1895/96 as a police commissioner, second class (2. Sınıf Polis Komiseri). In place of a title the lists give Ihrac for 1884 to 1888.

Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1879/80 to a peak of 600 in 1895/96, as 2. Sınıf Polis Komiseri in Üsküdar, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1901/02. Mehmet Nezir received a medal ("iftihar Madalyasi").
