Life

Born in Ruse (Rusçuk) in 1860/61 (AH 1277) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Abdullah Kemali Efendi was the child of a farmer (çiftçi). Abdullah Kemali had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), wrote Turkish and spoke French and Persian, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

Work began in the Tahrirat Kalemi in Babadag in 1874/75, at about 14, paid from the start, on 100 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with Abdullah Kemali in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi) and no place named. The last post was in Tripoli (Trablusgarp) in 1893/94.

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 700 kuruş a month in 1892/93, in the Muhasebe Kalemi, when 73 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1893/94.
