Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290), Mehmet Naşit Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a chief telegraph director (telgraf başmüdürü). Work began in Tripoli (Trablusgarp) in 1889/90, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 75 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with Mehmet Naşit as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Erenköy. Next came Tripoli in 1893/94, as a chief communications official (Başmuhabere Memuru), and Beyoğlu in 1894/95, then a return to Erenköy from 1895 to 1902. In 1902/03 the lists place Mehmet Naşit again in Tripoli, with a rise to director of the first grade (1. Müdür). The posts lie on three continents, Africa, Asia and Europe, as for fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 1,350 in 1902/03, the peak, as 1. Müdür in Tripoli, when 93 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
