Life#
Mehmet Murat Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1877/78 (AH 1294), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mehmet Murat began work in Istanbul in 1890/91, at about 14, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places Mehmet Murat in Üsküdar as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Mehmet Murat back to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1893 to 1895, with a rise to a post in the dispatch office (Sevk Kalemi), then Üsküdar in 1895/96, as Muhabere Memuru, and Istanbul in 1896/97. Mehmet Murat then moved back to Üsküdar from 1897 to 1900. The last posts were in Erenköy in 1900/01 and Üsküdar again from 1901 to 1903.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 400 in 1895/96, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Üsküdar, when 30 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
