Life

Born in Istanbul in 1874/75 (AH 1291), Ali Rıza Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). At about 18, in 1892/93, Ali Rıza began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places Ali Rıza in Üsküdar as an official (Memur), where the entries run to 1895/96. Ali Rıza then moved to Elassona (Alasonya), Yemen and Bajil (Bacil) from 1896 to 1900, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1896/97 and to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1899/1900. The last post was in Yemen again in 1900/01. The farthest post, Yemen, lay about 3,200 km from Istanbul, and fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.

Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to a peak of 1,200 in 1899/1900, as 2. Müdür in Bajil, when 92 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 1,000 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1900/01.
