Life#
Ahmet Nihalettin Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1857/58 (AH 1274) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Ahmet Nihalettin also attended the telegraph school.
Ahmet Nihalettin began work in Istanbul in 1876/77, at about 18, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1878, places Ahmet Nihalettin in Istanbul, the birthplace, as an official (Memur), where the entries run to 1888/89, with a rise to a post in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi) in 1882/83. The annual lists then follow Ahmet Nihalettin to Yemen, Bozcaada and Dinar from 1889 to 1900, with a rise to Memur in 1889/90. The last posts were in Ioannina (Yanya) from 1900 to 1903. The farthest post, Yemen, lay about 3,200 km from Istanbul, and fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1878 to 800 in 1889/90, the peak, as Memur in Yemen, when 78 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 500 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1902/03.
