Life#
Ali Ferit Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1857/58 (AH 1274) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Ali Ferit began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Istanbul in 1874/75, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1877/78, with Ali Ferit as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Ruse (Rusçuk). Ali Ferit then moved to Keşan in 1878/79 and Mount Athos in 1882/83, then Vushtrri (Vulçıtrın) from 1883 to 1889. For 1879 to 1882 the lists have no entry. The last entry, for 1889/90, names neither a title nor a place.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 500 kuruş a month in 1877/78, as Muhabere Memuru in Ruse, when 36 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1889/90; the list of 1905/06 (AH 1323) gives the status word Vefat (death).
