Life#
Hafız Ali Efendi was born in Nevşehir in 1860/61 (AH 1277), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ali also attended the telegraph school and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1876/77, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1877/78, with Ali as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Ruse (Rusçuk). Next came Korçë (Görice) and Ohrid (Ohri) from 1878 to 1883, then Aleppo (Halep) from 1884 to 1891. Ali then moved to Osmaniye, Karataş and Feke from 1891 to 1895. The last posts were in Yumurtalık from 1895 to 1897.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to 600 in 1895/96, the peak, as a director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in Yumurtalık, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 540 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1896/97.
