Life#
Born in Nevşehir in 1861/62 (AH 1278), Hafız Mustafa Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Mustafa had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 30, in 1891/92, Mustafa began work in Nevşehir, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Few began so late; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 30 or older. So long an unpaid start was rare; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1898/99, with Mustafa as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Konya. The last posts were in Kırşehir from 1899 to 1902 and İncesu from 1902 to 1904.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1898/99 to a peak of 400 in 1902/03, as Muhabere Memuru in İncesu, when one in three paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
