Life#
Born in Erzincan in 1861/62 (AH 1278) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmet Hamdi Efendi was the child of a sergeant (çavuş). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Erzincan in 1878/79, at about 17, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1881/82, places Ahmet Hamdi in Erzurum as a postal official (Posta Memuru). Ahmet Hamdi then moved to Doğubayazıt in 1883/84, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), then back to Erzincan, the birthplace, from 1884 to 1892. Next came a return to Erzurum from 1892 to 1906. The last post was in Bulanık in 1906/07.
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to a peak of 500 in 1892/93, as Muhabere Memuru in Erzurum, when 44 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 26 years the salaries add up to 138,120 kuruş, 89 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
