Life#
Born in Erzincan in 1867/68 (AH 1284), Mehmet Zülfü Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Mehmet Zülfü had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Erzurum in 1882/83, at about 16, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1882/83, with Mehmet Zülfü as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Erzurum. Mehmet Zülfü then moved to Tercan in 1883/84, then back to Erzincan, the birthplace, from 1884 to 1891. Next came Beirut in 1891/92. The last posts were in Kiğı from 1892 to 1897, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to 600 in 1892/93, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Kiğı, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1896/97. Mehmet Zülfü probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl kayıtlarına Göre Erzincanlı memurlar" by ENGİN ADAK (2008) (the name, the birthplace and a place of service agree).
