Life

Born in Erzincan in 1873/74 (AH 1290), Abdurrahman Sırrı Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (katip). Abdurrahman Sırrı had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

Work began in Tortum in 1896/97, at about 23, with nine unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. So long an unpaid start was rare; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for nine years or longer. Both annual entries, for 1905/06 and 1906/07, place Abdurrahman Sırrı in Bayburt as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Bayburt, when 23 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07. Abdurrahman Sırrı probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl kayıtlarına Göre Erzincanlı memurlar" by ENGİN ADAK (2008) (the name and the birthplace agree).
