Life#
Born in Bitlis in 1873/74 (AH 1290), Abdülbaki Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a sergeant (çavuş). Abdülbaki had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Bitlis in 1899/1900, at about 26, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1900/01, with Abdülbaki as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Bitlis, the birthplace. The lists have no entry for 1901 to 1903. The last posts were in Diyarbakır from 1903 to 1905 and Muş in 1905/06.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1900/01, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Bitlis, when 31 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, four years of salary come to 16,800 kuruş, 73 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
