Life#
Born in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Haşim Efendi was the child of a sergeant (çavuş). Schooling took seven years, at the Model of Progress School (Numune-i Terakki Mektebi); Mehmet Haşim also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Mehmet Haşim began work in Beirut in 1897/98, at about 24, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1900/01 to 1906/07 places Mehmet Haşim in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Beirut, the birthplace.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to a peak of 380 in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Beirut, when 38 per cent of paid officials earned less.
