Life#
Born in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1881/82 (AH 1299), İbrahim Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. İbrahim had seven years of schooling, at the Model of Progress School (Numune-i Terakki Mektebi), and wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Beirut in 1900/01, at about 18, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1903/04, to 1908/09, every annual entry places İbrahim in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Beirut, the birthplace.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 250 kuruş a month in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in Beirut, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, three years of salary come to 8,760 kuruş, 64 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1908/09.
