Life#
Ahmet Rasim Efendi was born in Erzurum in 1881/82 (AH 1299) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (katip). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Rasim also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 17, in 1899/1900, Ahmet Rasim began work in Erzurum, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1903/04, to 1905/06, every annual entry places Ahmet Rasim in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Erzurum, the birthplace.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1903/04 to 400 in 1905/06, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Erzurum, when 38 per cent of paid officials earned less.
