Life#
Ahmet Cemal Efendi was born in Crete (Girit) in 1881/82 (AH 1299) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (katip). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Cemal also wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1903/04, at about 21, paid from the start, on 75 kuruş a month. From the first annual entry, for 1903/04, to 1907/08, every annual entry places Ahmet Cemal in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Istanbul.
