Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1880/81 (AH 1298), Halil Ziya Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Vapur Biletcisi". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Halil Ziya began work in Istanbul in 1898/99, at about 17, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 65 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1903/04 to 1905/06 places Halil Ziya in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
