Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1880/81 (AH 1298) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmet Celal Efendi was the child of a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Ahmet Celal began work in Istanbul in 1894/95, at about 14, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1895/96, places Ahmet Celal in Üsküdar as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Ahmet Celal back to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1897 to 1900, then Afyonkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Sahib), Beynel haremeyn and Sofia (Sofya) from 1900 to 1903, with a rise to Muhabere Memuru in 1900/01. The last posts were in Kurtkoy from 1903 to 1906.
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to 800 in 1901/02, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Beynel haremeyn, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 475 kuruş. In all, 11 years of salary come to 42,600 kuruş, 65 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
