Life#
Abdurrahman Hilmi Efendi was born in Sjenica (Seniçe) in 1880/81 (AH 1298), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Abdurrahman Hilmi also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Sjenica in 1895/96, at about 15, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1898/99, with Abdurrahman Hilmi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Bijelo Polje (Akova). Next came Pristina (Priştine), Prizren and Sjenica from 1900 to 1906. In 1907/08 the lists place Abdurrahman Hilmi in Lefke.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 500 kuruş a month in 1898/99, as Muhabere Memuru in Bijelo Polje, when 48 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 285 kuruş. In all, eight years of salary come to 32,100 kuruş, 72 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years.
