Life#
Hayim Ancel Efendi was born in Veles (Köprülü) in 1879/80 (AH 1297), into the Jewish (Musevi) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Hayim Ancel also wrote Arabic, Italian and Turkish.
At about 16, in 1896/97, Hayim Ancel began work in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1899/1900, places Hayim Ancel in Üsküdar as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). The last posts were in Prizren and Pljevlja (Taşlıca) from 1901 to 1906 and Skopje (Üsküp) in 1906/07, with a rise to Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in 1904/05.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1899/1900 to 500 in 1904/05, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Pljevlja, when 52 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
