Life#
Vasilaki Efendi was born in Edirne in 1879/80 (AH 1297), into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Vasilaki also wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.
Work began in Keşan in 1903/04, at about 23, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1903/04, with Vasilaki as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Keşan. From 1905 to 1909 the annual entries place Vasilaki in Komotini (Gümülcine).
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1903/04 to 250 in 1905/06, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Komotini, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over six years the salaries add up to 15,600 kuruş, 52 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1908/09.
