Life#
Born in Aleppo (Halep) in 1879/80 (AH 1297) into the Syriac Christian (Süryani) community, Fetullah Efendi was the child of an official (memur). Fetullah had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi), and wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.
At about 20, in 1900/01, Fetullah began work in Aleppo, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1903/04, to 1907/08, every annual entry places Fetullah in the same post, official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), in Aleppo, the birthplace.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1903/04 to a peak of 350 in 1906/07, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Aleppo, when 36 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over five years the salaries add up to 15,600 kuruş, 60 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
