Life#
Born in Keşan in 1879/80 (AH 1297) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, ANASTAŞ EFENDİ was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). ANASTAŞ had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi), and wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Keşan in 1896/97, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1900/01, with ANASTAŞ as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Konya, where the entries run to 1905/06. The last post was in Aydın in 1906/07.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1900/01, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Konya, when 31 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
